Therapy dog for dementia patients

March 14, 2014 by Admin

Therapy dogs for dementia patients? Do they exist? How can they help someone with dementia?

In certain cases, it is possible to train a therapy dog to help these people. However, the partner must always cooperate in the training of the dog as well.

What can such a dog help with?

  • execute a number of concrete tasks:
  • picking up medicine for the dementia patient
  • remind the dementia patients that it is time to eat
  • encourage the person with dementia to get out of bed
  • point out the location of their clothing to the patient
  • get help
  • raise the alarm if necessary
  • help with anxiety, aggression

The practical help not only helps the partner with dementia, but also the caring partner by partially relieving them.
